Yamaha Releases Tenori-On 2.1 Firmware Update: What's New + How to Find The Download + New Computer Control Overview

image

Hey look, my Tenori-On is running 2.10!!!

What’s New

Note: I used Google to translate then used info from manual to edit the translation.

  1. TENORI-TENORI remote session capabilities between different ON-ON(TNR-W/TNR-O version 2.1 or later) via a MIDI cable.
  2. Joining a Multiplayer session features TNR-by connecting iPhone (yes the site says iPhone so perhaps there is also an iPhone app coming) or the iPad via TNR-i.  You can join a multiplayer session with Game Center.
  3. Control functions remotely from a computer
  4. Changed the way effect settings are saved. Effect settings (reverb type, reverb parameters, Chorus Type, Chorus parameters) can now be saved in Song, All Blocks, Current Blocks and All Settings.

Download the Firmware

Yamaha has now updated the official site with links and details on the firmware. Click here to jump to the official site and visit the support tab.

New “Remote” Mode

image

There is a new mode called Remote. I recommend you read the manual included in the zip file, but I will offer an overview here. Remote mode allows you to sync and share performance data between two hardware devices (TNR-O/TNR-W) as well as join a multiple session via an iOS device running TNR-i. Before you access it, Save all the performance data and settings “'File”-> “All Blocks” as remote mode needs this part of memory to operate and as a result deletes these settings.

  1. To you access “Remote Mode” press [CLEAR] and [OK]
  2. Play the session
  3. Exit the session by pressing [Cancel] and [Clear]

 Computer Control Overview

If remote mode weren't cool enough, Yamaha also added the ability to remotely operate the hardware from a computer via MIDI. There is a very detailed MIDI Sysex specification in the manual in the kit so I’ll just offer a summary here. After a quick review of the MIDI implementation table it looks like you could pretty much control just about all major playing and navigation functions via MIDI Sysex!

  • Remote Mode On/Off Request
  • Remote Mode On/Off Reply
  • Turn LED’s On and Off
  • Turn button on at DRAW Mode
  • LED Button OFF at PUSH mode
  • LED Button hold at SCORE & RANDOM Modes
  • Rotation
  • Play/Pause
  • Loop indicator position
  • Clear/Reset: This Layer, This Block, All Blocks, Reset Blocks
  • Copy: to Block Number, to Layer Number, from Block Number, from Layer Number
  • Common Parameters: Master Volume, Tempo, Scale, Transpose, Loop Speed, Loop Point Top, Loop Point End; Reset Loop Timing, Mute, Swing Rate, Reverb Type, Reverb Param, Chorus Type, Chorus Param
  • Layer Parameter: Instrument, Sound Length, Loop Speed, Loop Point, Volume, Panpot, Animation type, Animation direction, Octav
  • Random Sequence Number
  • Current Block
  • Current Layer Change
  • Current Layer Notify

Update Details

Checkout the PDF manual in the zip for details on the update including a detailed MIDI Specification.

Moog Music Releases Phatty Firmware Update Version 3.1

image

Moog Music has released a free firmware update for Little Phatty and Slim Phatty to 3.1. Below is a summary video (watch embedded video)

This looks like a must-have upgrade as it adds a lot of features that are standard in the latest digital synths. Nice to see Moog Music putting energy into keeping up to date on the analog side of things. I don't own a Phatty, so if you do, weigh in on the update via comments link at footer of this post.

New features in the Phatty OS v3.1 update include the following features that improve power, sound and control:

  • Volume Velocity Sensitivity: The ability to map note velocity to output volume with fifteen adjustable levels of sensitivity saved per preset. [Tribute Edition hardware does not currently support this feature]
  • Legato Glide: Automatically engage the pitch glide between legato notes. Non-overlapping notes snap instantly to a new pitch. The user is able to play or sequence dynamic bends and slides mixed with cleanly-articulated notes.
  • LFO Reset: The ability to reset the LFO cycle at the start of each note. Two LFO trigger modes provide dynamic new modulation possibilities.
  • Sustain/Hold Mode: A sustain pedal or control voltage plugged into the CV GATE input jack can now be used to send MIDI Sustain on/off, and to polyphonically sustain MIDI notes from the Phatty keyboard.
  • 14-bit MIDI: All Phatty synths can now send and receive high-resolution 14-bit MIDI messages for critical voltage-controlled parameters.
  • MIDI Output Filtering: New options control which MIDI CC messages are sent from the Phatty, for maximum compatibility with external gear.
  • Expanded MIDI Clock sync options: 22 clock divisions including triplet values for both LFO and Arpeggiator MIDI sync. Clock divisions range from 32nd triplets up to 4 bars.
  • Improvements to Arpeggiator:
    • Global Arp Setup menu: Set important arpeggiator parameters at a global level. Arpeggiator also remains active when presets are changed.
    • Gate Length: Adjust the arpeggiator note length from 50% to greater than 100% (overlapping), for a range of new sonic textures.Arp Clock Send: Arpeggiator can now send MIDI Clock, MIDI Start and Stop messages, allowing you to synchronize other gear to the Phatty internal clock.
  • Improvements to Polyphonic Mode:
    • New polyphonic note-allocation scheme: Uses a “round-robin” algorithm to share notes across multiple Phatty synths in a natural and very playable way.
    • Polyphonic arpeggiation: Multiple ways to use the Arpeggiator across a poly chain of Phatty synths, from tight integration to completely freeform.

Ableton Colorado User Group Launches Free Collective Patch Library on GitHub

Ableton Colorado User Group in conjunction with DJNSM/Datamafia launches a Free Collective Patch Library on GitHub. The premise behind this site library is to create “an area where we can share, store, and expand our library using the basic building blocks of Ableton.“

The rules are simple: Original stuff please Nothing that requires wave files…[don't use FX that are exclusive to Suite]. Any patch config from the Ableton platfrom (Operator, Analog, Tension, M4L, etc) is welcome! Macro your patch and label the main 8 (or less) macro knobs. If you can't do it in 8 macros, turn it into multiple patches. When naming your knobs use logical names. One knob called "Tweak" is okay, but everything else should make sense (e.g. Filter Freq, wet/dry, distortion, etc) Yes! Max4Live patches are welcome!

Currently Marc the moderator adds patches to the library which users can download as one .zip file. This works well so far as there are no .wav files and these are patches within racks.

Things are just getting rolling but there are some fun patches out there already for Analog, FX, and Operator by DJNSM, James Tobin, and Chase Dobson (who’s been on the road doing backline Ableton Tech for Mike Posner), and yours truly.

James Tobin wins the award for patch names that make me LOL with…

Gary Numan - Are Friends Electric Old Grey Whistle Test 1979

I just stumbled on this video “Gary Numan - Are Friends Electric Old Grey Whistle Test 1979” (watch embedded video). The quality is fantastic for a vid from 1979. Lots of Minimoogs :^)

Modulate This Patch Lab News: Reorganization and Focus on Larger Sound Sets + New Micro Sites for UltraNova and Blofeld

Patchlab_thumb_01
I'm changing my strategy around patch releases resulting in a re-purposing and reorganization of the Patchlab microsite I started earlier this year.

After experimenting with offering different types of downloads, I've found that one-off free patches are nowhere near as popular as larger sound sets. I'm therefore focusing my energy on creation of larger sound sets. I'll now be using the Patchlab microsite a one-stop catalog for past and future sound sets.

I moved the free one-off patches to a section  in the microsite called "Patch Stream" and from time-to-time I will add individual patches time permitting.

I'm also slowly working away on sound sets for the Waldorf Blofeld and Novation UltraNova. I've become quite fond of both these synths and want to be able to go on about them without swamping Modulate This! with these posts. I will still do occasional posts on these synths on the primary blog - you know posts on major firmware updates and such.

If you want email notification for releases of sound sets, you can opt-in to the Modulate This Newsletter or subscribe to the feeds from one the microsites.

Swing by http://patchlab.modulatethis.com to check out these changes.
