Rob Papen's Blade Synthesizer Now Available + My Patches in Factory Sound Set

markmosher_nanoswarmdrone

Rob Papen’s brand new virtual synthesizer Blade released yesterday. The price is € 99USD 119 (introduction price until end of May) and is available http://www.robpapen.com/blade.html.

The minute I saw teaser videos from NAMM I knew I’d be getting Blade because of it’s fresh immediate and expressive approach to additive synthesis. I became part of the beta team and since January I’ve been helping out by beta testing, making suggestions for features, and also creating new sounds.

While I’ve been releasing patches for various synths via Patchlab for sometime, this is the first time some of my patches made it into the factory library of a commercial synth – woot!  The screen shot above is one of my patches called “Nano Swarm Drone” where I flood the XY path with sustained notes using the Strum feature.

After you buy or download the demo, you can checkout my patches by clicking “Manager” then “Find” and enter “ MM”.

There are just tons of great factory patches from Rob and other sound designers as well giving you lots to start with. I encourage you to poke around and reverse engineer some patches. Remember the XY can be both a modulation source and target and can be mapped to a majority of parameters (filter, FX params…) not just the additive synth engine. Also note that he filters , FX (including the new tape effects added to Predator in December) and modulation system are straight out of Predator so they sound great and if you know Predator you’ll feel right at home in Blade.

If you are curios about what Blade sounds like checkout this new embedded tutorial video.

Tomorrow's World on Sampling and MIDI with Midge Ure as Seen from 1987

A link to this cool  video was just posted over on http://www.facebook.com/pages/Official-Midge-Ure-Fansite.

The first half of the video is an interview with Midge Ure on sequencing, guitar synths, and sampling. The second half features some behind-the-scenes footage of Peter Wilshire and Robin Lumley gathring field recordings at a zoo for sample-based compositions.

I've been at this sort of a thing for a while now so it's fun to see the tools of the past and how much has changed.

Moog Releases Free Computer Editor Librarian for Minitaur Analog Synthesizer

SNAGHTML1d96d4a7[4]

From the coverage I saw of Winter NAMM 2012 this year, affordable analog synths were all the buzz. Specifically the Arturia MiniBrute and the MOOG Minitaur. While one knob per function is great, I was really disappointed to find that there was no on-board patch management on these synths. As a synthesist and performer that’s a show stopper for me as I don’t have time to dial in patch starting points  live and want a synth that does more than one function in show.

One of the videos that came out of NAMM, the Arturia demo person was asked about this and he said it wasn’t technically possible for their synth and he suggested using a smart phone to take a picture of the knobs :^( Knowing Moog has editors for their analog synths, I was optimistic that they’d release something eventually for Minitaur.

Back in February, I was in Atlanta competing in the Guthman Musical Instrument competition at Georgia Tech and got to meet and briefly chat with Moog’s Senior Engineer Cyril Lance. I asked him if they had an editor on the way, and he indicated they did, but didn’t really expand on when it would release. When I got back I did little searching and found nothing.

Now with all the unboxing videos getting posted for Minitaur, I decided to look again, and I’m happy to report there is in fact a patch a FREE patch librarian and editor on http://www.moogmusic.com/downloads.

While I don’t have a Minitaur (yet), I did download the software on to my Windows 7 laptop. Here are some actual screen shots of the editor running on my system.

Waldorf Blofeld Public Beta Firmware V1.16B2

blofeld_1-16B2

A few months back Kay Dee from Waldorf support has been participating in an unofficial Blofeld Facebook group. There has been discussion and buzz about Waldorf starting to work on a firmware update for the Blofeld including a thread where Kay requested feedback on new feature requirements. For those not familiar with Waldorf, they are a very small company and tend to focus the company on a product at time then rotate through to do updates.  It’s clear work has begun on a new update as evidenced by this interim bug fix update that’s now in beta.

Interestingly, Waldorf announced this on a Facebook post as a first move even before posting on their web site. It’s a small touch, but a nice way to give back  to the FB group who’s been giving them feedback.

So what’s new in V1.16B2?

Blofeld Public Beta Firmware V1.16B2

- Fix for some units that exhibited occasional clicks with Reverb and/or Modwheel
- Less sensible [I think they mean “sensitive” so you don’t get erroneous values] encoder scanning for improved accuracy
- Possible fix for spurious 'Init' sound program deadlock situation
- Category search improved

Since the most annoying bugs are those that only occur on some units under
very specific circumstances, we would be happy about any feedback, positive
or negative, about this public beta firmware.

Please send you findings to blofeld@waldorfmusic.de

Your Waldorf Team

Be aware, this is a beta release. I installed it and works fine. Some people on the FB group are reporting that some patches that used to have “pops” in them have been cleaned up.
