Starting Work on an iPad Lemur Template for Moog Phatty

I've started work on an iPad Lemur template for my Moog Slim Phatty. This will most likely end up on Patch Lab at some point so signup for my email newslettter if you want to be notified. This is a very early version of what I have ultimately planned but I thought I'd share this as I went along.

I'm programming the Lemur via Wifi, the Lemur is attached to the Phatty via the camera kit and straight into the USB port. I also have a Novation Remote SL hooked up via MIDI to play notes on the Phatty. You can also use WiFi via a host like Ableton live to control the Phatty.

In this version of the template, Filter controls are in red. There is an XY for Cutoff and Res with physics controls for Friction, Attraction and Speed. I can also lock the control on the X and Y Axis. To the right Filter EG amount with filter envelopes. Under that Filter Overload.

Next are Arpeggiator controls that are normally hidden under-the-hood in the Advanced Menu. So I can directly control Arp on, Latch, Clock Div, and Arp Octave. To the right of this a little note trigger button.

Lastly I have an Amp Envelope in Blue. Unlike from the front panel of the Phatty, Lemur allows me to control more than one parameter at the same time, like Cutoff and Res, or all the segments of a an envelope.

Teenage Engineering OP-1 & Moog Little Phatty Sightings in NPR "Yacht: Tiny Desk Concert" Video

I actually had not heard about the Tiny Desk Concert series on NPR before I saw a post about it on the Moog Music Facebook page. It's a pretty cool idea. In this video - a fun performance by Yacht and some synth action on withThe Moog Little Phatty is clearly visible. Watch closely for the OP-1.

Here is a more electro version of “Utopia / Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire)”. Yes, more synths, and some DEVOesqe looking uniforms – sweet!

Moog Music Releases Phatty Firmware Update Version 3.1

Moog Music has released a free firmware update for Little Phatty and Slim Phatty to 3.1. Below is a summary video (watch embedded video)

This looks like a must-have upgrade as it adds a lot of features that are standard in the latest digital synths. Nice to see Moog Music putting energy into keeping up to date on the analog side of things. I don't own a Phatty, so if you do, weigh in on the update via comments link at footer of this post.

New features in the Phatty OS v3.1 update include the following features that improve power, sound and control:

Volume Velocity Sensitivity: The ability to map note velocity to output volume with fifteen adjustable levels of sensitivity saved per preset. [Tribute Edition hardware does not currently support this feature]
Legato Glide: Automatically engage the pitch glide between legato notes. Non-overlapping notes snap instantly to a new pitch. The user is able to play or sequence dynamic bends and slides mixed with cleanly-articulated notes.
LFO Reset: The ability to reset the LFO cycle at the start of each note. Two LFO trigger modes provide dynamic new modulation possibilities.
Sustain/Hold Mode: A sustain pedal or control voltage plugged into the CV GATE input jack can now be used to send MIDI Sustain on/off, and to polyphonically sustain MIDI notes from the Phatty keyboard.
14-bit MIDI: All Phatty synths can now send and receive high-resolution 14-bit MIDI messages for critical voltage-controlled parameters.
MIDI Output Filtering: New options control which MIDI CC messages are sent from the Phatty, for maximum compatibility with external gear.
Expanded MIDI Clock sync options: 22 clock divisions including triplet values for both LFO and Arpeggiator MIDI sync. Clock divisions range from 32^nd triplets up to 4 bars.
Improvements to Arpeggiator:
- Global Arp Setup menu: Set important arpeggiator parameters at a global level. Arpeggiator also remains active when presets are changed.
- Gate Length: Adjust the arpeggiator note length from 50% to greater than 100% (overlapping), for a range of new sonic textures.Arp Clock Send: Arpeggiator can now send MIDI Clock, MIDI Start and Stop messages, allowing you to synchronize other gear to the Phatty internal clock.
Improvements to Polyphonic Mode:
- New polyphonic note-allocation scheme: Uses a “round-robin” algorithm to share notes across multiple Phatty synths in a natural and very playable way.
- Polyphonic arpeggiation: Multiple ways to use the Arpeggiator across a poly chain of Phatty synths, from tight integration to completely freeform.
